EuroScience Open Forum 2024: Life Changes Science

Innovative Approaches to Sustainable Resource Management: Bridging Science and Industry

The European Science Open Forum (ESOF) 2024 in Katowice, Poland, is set to host a session on June 12-15th titled “Innovative Approaches to Sustainable Resource Management: Bridging Science and Industry.” This session will delve into groundbreaking projects that address pressing environmental challenges, showcasing the power of collaboration between academia and industry in fostering a sustainable future.

One of the highlighted projects is VALZEO, our initiative funded under the HORIZON-MSCA-2021-SE-01 program. VALZEO focuses on the valorization of rice husk ash (RHA), a byproduct of rice production that often poses environmental and health concerns. By transforming RHA into zeolite-based composite materials, VALZEO aims to achieve a twofold impact: water remediation and biofuel production.

The project’s innovative approach involves extracting silica from RHA and developing composite materials capable of removing pollutants such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, dyes, and microorganisms from water. Additionally, these materials can be used as catalysts in the production of biodiesel, contributing to the development of cleaner energy sources.

VALZEO’s multi-faceted approach includes laboratory-scale validation, pilot plant validation, and comprehensive environmental, sustainability, and economic assessments. The project also emphasizes stakeholder engagement, ensuring that the developed solutions align with real-world needs and concerns.

By bridging the gap between academic research and industrial application, VALZEO exemplifies the potential of collaborative efforts to drive sustainable resource management. The project’s outcomes promise to have far-reaching implications for environmental remediation, biofuel production, and the advancement of a circular economy.

The session will also feature presentations on other innovative projects, including NANOGUARD2AR, which focuses on developing nanomaterials-based solutions for indoor air quality control; CO2MPRISE, which explores new technologies for CO2 capture and conversion; and CHemPGM, which investigates the chemistry of Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) for sustainable resource management.

Join us at ESOF 2024 to learn more about VALZEO, NANOGUARD2AR, CO2MPRISE, CHemPGM, and other cutting-edge projects that are shaping the future of sustainable resource management. Together, we can create a greener and more resilient world.
