The European Research Executive Agency, under the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), proudly presents a series of groundbreaking projects at the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) 2024. This year’s thematic session, “Innovative Approaches to Sustainable Resource Management,” showcases the critical advancements and collaborations between science and industry aimed at promoting environmental sustainability.

Introduction by REA Representative

The session will be moderated by MSc Industrial Engineer/MBA R. Gutiérrez Domínguez from the European Research Executive Agency. The thematic session will feature presentations from several MSCA projects, demonstrating the tangible impact of international collaboration and innovative research on sustainable resource management.

  1. VALZEO Project

Speaker: Dr. A. Bartoli, AERIS Tecnologias Ambientales SL, Spain
Objective: Valorization of rice husk ash (RHA) to produce zeolite-based composite materials for environmental remediation and biofuel production.
Partners: Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Universidad Pablo Olavide, Universita Politecnica delle Marche, and others.
Outcomes: Development of composite materials for water treatment and biodiesel catalysis, promoting a circular economy approach.

  1. NANOGUARD2AR Project

Speaker: Dr. Svitlana Lyubchyk, Lusofona University, Portugal
Objective: Deliver nanomaterials-based engineering solutions to ensure a microbial-free indoor environment.
Partners: Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique, Universidade Lusófona, École Nationale Supérieure des Mines d’Alès, and others.
Outcomes: Development and validation of an air-curtain enhanced by advanced nano-photocatalytic units for efficient indoor air quality control.

  1. CO2MPRISE Project

Speaker: Prof. G. Mulas, University of Sassari, Italy
Objective: Develop new technologies for CO2 capture and conversion.
Partners: University of Sassari, Universidad de Burgos, Hereon Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Monolithos Catalysts & Recycling Ltd, and others.
Outcomes: Implementation of scalable processes for CO2 reduction, development of robust and metal-free sorbent membranes for CO2 capture.

  1. CHemPGM Project

Speaker: Prof. Dr. A. Moschovi, MONOLITHOS Catalysts & Recycling Ltd, Greece
Objective: Investigate the chemistry of Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) and develop sustainable recovery processes.
Partners: Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Institute of Catalysis of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, University of Cape Town, and others.
Outcomes: Significant advancements in recycling PGMs for use in new catalytic materials, contributing to the EU’s climate goals.

Panel Discussion

The session will conclude with a Q&A and debate, allowing the audience to engage with the panelists. Topics will include the synergies between innovation and industry-academia collaboration, the impact of EU research policies, and the benefits of sustainable partnerships through the MSCA projects.
